  • Unaware that the water pump is broken, a lone firefighter waits for pressure to build while fighting an early morning bosque fire in Albuquerque's north valley. No one was injured and no homes burned in the fire sparked by the campfire of a homeless man who lived across the Rio Grande.
  • Native American dancers flood the floor of The Pit in Albuquerque during the Grand Entry of the 2004 Gathering of Nation Pow Wow.
  • Scottie Schuman, a newly initiated member of the 1950s-style Rumblers, gives a hug to his new squeeze, Trudy Mueller. Chops Griego's '46 green Dodge marks the hangout for the {quote}greasers{quote} who gather outside the Heights Community Center when it is transformed into a dance hall with swing music each Tuesday evening in Albuquerque.
  • One of Gretchen Hall's two dogs looks out the window as the Santa Fe River comes down from its crest. The car filled with water to within a foot of the windows. The dogs were retrieved unharmed after the water subsided.
  • Reflections from a glass-faced building cast a kaleidoscope of light on a Washington, D.C. street scene.
  • An unidentified man hangs from a power line over the American River in Sacramento, Calif. After cutting his wrists and neck, and threatening to both hang and electrocute himself, he climbed down into police custody. The ordeal on the 115,000 volt power lines caused gas and electricity to be turned off in nearby neighborhoods.

Next to them is Kara Rodriguez, 7. Participants are allowed to sleep anywhere in the aquarium with most people bedding down between 10:30 and 11:00 p.m.
  • Inmates from the Guadalupe County Correctional Facility in Santa Rosa, N.M., lie on the ground after filing out of buses and vans near dawn at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque. Guards searched them one by one before they boarded a plane bound for Wallens Ridge State Prison in Virginia. New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson made the decision to send the inmates out of state after violence at the Santa Rosa prison resulted in the death of a guard.
  • During a Matachine dance performed in Alcalde, N.M., Alexandra Salazar, 5, playing the role of Malinche, makes an unrehearsed sneer at El Torito, {quote}the little bull{quote} who represents evil to Salazar's good. The dance is traditional throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
  • A blanket of morning snow defines the shape of honey locust trees planted in 1982 at the Tannenbaum Landscape tree nursery in Algodones, N.M. The unexpected March snowfall briefly interrupted New Mexico's glide into spring.
  • While stopping cars at a check point south of Chilili, N.M., Bernalillo County Sheriff's Deputy Gloria Marcott keeps a photo of suspect Michael Paul Astorga, wanted for killing a fellow deputy, tucked in her shotgun. At the check point, two officers look into vehicles and ask if motorists have seen the man. Astorga was later arrested in Juarez, Mexico and brought back to Albuquerque for trial.
